Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
Union Minister Sukant Majumdar has come down heavily on the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government following violent unrest in Jalangi, Murshidabad, where a Block Development Officer’s office was vandalised and police vehicles were set ablaze. The Union Minister termed the incident as a direct outcome of minority appeasement and vote bank politics being practiced in the state.
Speaking to the media, Majumdar accused the administration of failing to protect law and order while allowing selective violence against members of the Hindu community. He claimed that Hindus were being identified and beaten up, and issued a stern warning that if they were forced to retaliate, the consequences would be severe. “If Hindus come out in force, they will have to pay heavily,” he remarked, in a politically charged statement that has drawn both attention and criticism.
The Jalangi incident involved a large mob attack that resulted in public property damage, including torching of police vehicles, and the ransacking of government offices. The reason for the agitation remains under investigation, but tensions remain high in the area, prompting increased police presence.
The remarks by Majumdar have further polarized the political discourse in West Bengal, with BJP accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress of encouraging mob behavior for electoral gain, while TMC leaders have called the comments inflammatory. The situation continues to evolve, with security being heightened in sensitive pockets of Murshidabad.
